How do I prepare for my viva voce?

The viva voce involves a focused, academic discussion with experts in your field on the research described in your thesis. Examiners can clarify questions that have come up during their reading of the thesis and you can defend your work having reviewed their written preliminary comments in advance of the oral examination. Students are advised to sign up for a Thesis and Viva Examination Workshop to help with the viva voce preparation.
To prepare for your Viva Voce:
- Practice the 10-minute opening summary of your thesis and seek feedback from your supervisory team.
- Review the examiners' reports and ensure that you will be able to address highlighted concerns.
- Take note of the viva voce date and time and accept the calendar invitation.
- Prepare your UWA student ID card for verification.
- If you are undertaking your viva voce via video conferencing, log on at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time to ensure a clear connection. Prepare a headset or earphones with a microphone for optimal audio quality.
- For students undertaking their viva voce at a physical venue, be present at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Bring your laptop, charger and headset as a backup in case of technical difficulties.
Note: No visual aids including PowerPoint presentations are allowed as part of the student's presentation, however, you may bring your notes to refer to.
